Many people will not share if they are not made to. At least 50% of people on Soulseek are leeches.
Like someone else in this thread said, "You give someone the ability to be an asshole and there's like at least 50% chance they'll take it". And of those who downloaded from me and were actually sharing something, it was just as often a minimal amount of unorganised files from their "completed downloads" folder as it was an actual share. I left my files open and set it to automatically message people sharing nothing - the entire screen filled up with sent messages within a couple of days. 40k lossless is less than I'm sharing, but well above my good number. Just read my user info, send me a message asking to be on the list, and if a person is sharing decently, you're added! It doesn't matter if I like what you're sharing, as long as you are sharing a good number. I almost always have someone downloading from me and in the queue when I log on, so having my files unlocked would just make the good people - the ones who do share - have to wait even longer. The people who were sharing me their files would say "Hey, I can't get things from you" and it was all because of the people who had queued up all my stuff without giving back - you know, the "sharing" part.

I'd have a queue with tens of thousands of files queued up, many of them from people who shared either no files (and got the "You're not sharing any files, please share" auto-message - and still didn't share anything), only their download folder, or would share the generic windows files. I can't leave my machine on all the time, don't have a great upload speed, and want to make sure that I'm sharing with.people who are also sharing! Sorry, I'm probably on your list because my files are locked.
